Shabana FC chairman Jared Niverton has called for immediate release of a former financier who is currently locked in Arusha cells following a request by the United States to have him extradited to Washington to face charges on alleged fraud and money laundering.

Politician Don Bosco Gichana has been held behind bars in Tanzania with the US applying for his extradition for over a year now.

But on Tuesday, Shabana FC chairman Jared Niverton questioned the government’s non-commitment to have the businessman cum politician released even after the 'US failed to justify the charges'.

According to him, the club has been undergoing financial crisis since most of its operations were financed by the businessman.

“As a club, we want the government of Kenya to intervene and have Don released. He has been staying behind cells in Tanzania and the US is yet to give justifiable reasons for his extradition. Who were the chief contributor and patron of the club and that is why the club is struggling to settle its bills,” he said.

Niverton said the club will conduct prayers at Gusiii stadium on Sunday for the embattled businessman and associated the recent dismal performance of the club to a financial stalemate.

“We are hopeful that the government will take the matter seriously but meanwhile we will be praying for him this Sunday. The club isn’t doing well because most of the players and the staff haven’t been cleared their dues,” he said.

Gichana was arrested in Arusha when boarding a plane to Dar es Salaam after the US department of security issued a warrant of arrest based on alleged money laundering.
