Farmers in Gatundu North Sub-County have expressed concern over the shortage of top dressing fertilisers in the area.
Speaking in her office on Friday, Gatundu North Sub-County agriculture director Tabby Nyambura said the amount available in the sub-county was not adequate.
“We have been experiencing a shortage of top dressing fertilisers in this constituency since last month. I have myself recorded 18 complaints of farmers who decry the shortage,” said Nyambura.
The director said the demand was higher than the supply, adding that she had forwarded the complaints to the national government officers.
“The government is doing everything possible to see to it that farmers receive the commodity as soon as possible,” said Nyambura.
The sub-county director further urged the national government to ensure that the supply is made available at the local National Cereal and Produce Board (NCPB).
“It is the government’s mandate to supply fertilisers. Our farmers are experiencing hard times especially as they wait for the rainy season. My hope is that the government will consider fastening the supply process,” she said.
She pointed out that the county has been experiencing poor harvests due to poor farming systems, as most of the farmers have been planting without fertilisers.
