The National Government has set aside Sh 5 billion for housing and urban development in Kisumu County.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Friday ICT Cabinet Secretary and acting CS for Land, Housing and Urban Development Dr Fred Matiang'i said that Kisumu is perceived as an important aspect in terms of development in housing and urban development.

"From housing and urban development alone this financial year our government is putting Sh 5 billion for Kisumu county," said Dr Matiang'i. He asked Governor Ranguma to allocate funds from the County Kitty to assist in the housing project as well.

"I hope as you go along you will put something in the county budget so that the project can forge ahead. We looked at the potential of Kisumu it is huge," said acting CS for Land, Housing and Urban Development. He said that the challenge of grabbed public utility land is rampant in Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret. "This limits public institutions to move in and start working with county governments .We have already developed inventory of public utility with our colleagues in National Lands Commission and department of housing of property in Kisumu that has been grabbed," he said.

He said that National Land Commission is doing a great job in the recovery of public utility land, Dr Matiang'i said that the government plans to have title for public lands in schools, hospitals, provincial administration units across the country.
