The county and national governments should consider the disabled students while giving bursaries for the bright and needy students.

The chairman of the National Centre for People with Disabilities Uasin Gishu County Mr Titus Yego lamented that people with disabilities have always been sidelined during the process of issuing out bursaries.

Speaking in his office on Thursday, Yego noted that the able bodied people have are favoured during county and national bursary allocations.

“Students with disabilities have been performing extremely well in primary and secondary schools but their dreams have been cut shot due to lack of fees to pursue their dreams. No one seems concerned about their plight,” he said.

He said the Ministry of Education should reduce the cut of marks for joining university for people with disabilities since they undergo many difficulties.

“We are just like any other people. What makes us different is our physical bodies. We don’t need your sympathy but encouragement and motivation for us to live comfortably,” he added.

He gave a warning to parents who still hide their disabled children denying them the right to education that their days are numbered.

“I have received many reports of parents denying the disabled their right to education and in return putting first priority to the able children. All children are the same. We will take stern actions against such parents,” he said.

He pointed out that schools should consider the disabled students while constructing buildings for them to move freely without any difficulties.
