A Ministry of Education official in Nyamira County has warned elected student leaders in universities and colleges against using their positions to wreck havoc in their institutions.

Addressing mourners in a burial of a student who died in a road accident, Nyamira South Sub-County Education Officer, Kennedy Manono said even though learners were allowed to participate in electing their leaders, such exercises should be conducted after extensive awareness on leadership responsibilities.

Manono said that elective positions should not be used by the student leaders to cause trouble in schools or antagonise the lectures and authorities in the name of defending the rights of learners.

The officer was reacting to demonstrations by public university students over delayed Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) loans.

"Helb has its own time-frame to release funds and therefore students should be patient for few days," he said.

On the ongoing teachers' strike, he called upon the unions to embrace dialogue and come into an agreement with the government to resume teaching the soonest possible.
