Armed robbers on Wednesday shot and injured a Mount Kenya University student in a failed robbery attempt.

The student who was only identified as Mamule was shot on his arm after he tried to confront the thugs who fled after the shooting.

According to witnesses the thugs stormed into the student’s house ordering everyone to lie on the floor when Mamule tried to resist forcing the thugs to shoot him on his arm.

“He tried to resist orders the thugs were giving by confronting them when one of them shot his arm, we took him to Thika Level 5 hospital and he was discharged later at night,” said Kim Wamiguna, a student in the University.

“Security is an issue especially in places where students reside, early this year another student succumbed to injuries after he was attacked by thugs who were armed with knives on his way from school,” he added.

Another student Daniel Leyola told Hivisasa reporters on phone that students had planned to go into the streets over the issue but the school’s administration calmed them down and promised to address the issue.

"Students were planning to hold a peaceful demonstration but the administration has promised to address the matter," he said.

This comes barely two months after another student, Lawrence Omondi was shot dead by police during a student demonstration over insecurity around the institution’s environs.

"It was in March this year when a student was shot dead by police after students went on rampage over insecurity, I can’t believe that  the thugs are back more armed," Moses Wafula, a student said.

“The police should come to our help and help in curbing security,” he added.

Thika OCPD Mr Shadrak Maithya last month promised that security would be beefed up in the town advising residents to stop walking at night.
