Maseno University students residing in rental houses have raised an alarm over the poor conditions experienced in the premises.
According to a section of students who spoke to HiviSasa on Monday, hygiene has not been given priority by several of the area landlords.
The students claim that amenities such as wash rooms are not cleaned regularly, making it hard for them to use.
"Our washrooms have not been cleaned for close to a week despite us paying for them to be cleaned. They are also few and overstretched because they serve a high population. We are calling on our landlords to give us the value for our money," said Purity Kinanja a resident of Omola flats.
The landlords are said to only appear at the beginning of the month to collect rent leaving the tenants (largely students) at the hands of caretakers whom they say are unhelpful.
"This dirty environment is a big risk to our health, as we may acquire diseases," said Marion Ireri who resides in Vevy hostels.
The students say most of the rental houses do not match the expectations from what was advertised before they moved in.
The landlords have also been faulted for not putting in place adequate waste disposal mechanisms.
Efforts to get a comment from the landlord's association representative, Catherine Owek on phone were futile.
