Travelling Maseno University students were for the better part of Wednesday stranded at the institution following a crackdown on public transport by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The Kisumu-Busia highway was deserted as many vehicles stayed way for fear of being detained by NTSA officials.

Many students were unable to find transportation, a means to neighbouring towns of Kisumu and Luanda where they could link up with vehicles to their destination.

The learners, who cleared their exams on Monday, were given until Wednesday morning to vacate the institution, and many were inconvenienced as they had no option but to travel home, since the hostels were inaccessible.

“I don’t know what to do, I need to be in Kisumu at the moment in order to link up with a Mombasa vehicle. If these matatus fail to resume then I am doomed,” said Ann Okoto, a student at the institution.

Normal operation resumed very late in the evening when a majority of the students had given up and in search places to spend the night.

However, with matatus resuming operations was forced to double the fare in order to compensate for the lost time.
