Students of Mwongori secondary school in Borabu Constituency on Tuesday skipped classes to participate in a walk organized by the Christian union in a bid to raise funds for their colleagues who are less privileged.
According to them, the exercise aimed at rising over Sh5000, 000 that could be used to pay school fee for the disadvantage students who were doing well academically.
During the walk, they covered a distance of over 100km by visiting Chepilat, Nyansiongo, Mosobeti, Gesima and many other townships found in Borabu and its neighbouring Kitutu Masaba constituency.
“This is purely an event organized by students from the Christian Union team and the administration only helped us to make it a success. Many of our colleagues struggle to pay school fee and that is why we thought it could be proper if we contributed some little money for their sustainability,” said Captain Alex Makworo.
During the exercise, the determined students managed to raise Sh250,000 from well-wishers and small scale traders besides getting hefty promises from the nearby Kipkebe Tea Factory Sh100,000 and area MP Ben Momanyi who promised to deliver Sh200,000.
“I think the exercise has met its intended intention and we take this chance to thank all those who contributed and those who pledged led by our MP. I am now sure that the amount raised will help a number of needy students,” said Stella Ongwae, Chairperson CU.
School Principal Bogonko Onyari said the institution will hold such exercises to support intelligent students who faced challenges in paying school fee.
“The school has been performing well and that is why I think the CU has done a good thing. I urge them to organize such exercises in future,” he said.g pledges that could raise the figure/Abuga Makori)
