Thika West Sub-County solid waste system is set to improve following the entry of volunteer players seeking to collect wastes on behalf of the Sub-County government.

Janet Kanini, the deputy Sub-County environment officer announced that Jikwamue Jamii, a volunteer organisation funded by USAID will help them to collect wastes in the area. She also stated that with increased garbage disposal, there was a need to review garbage disposal in terms of creating opportunities.

Joseph Karume, the program supervisor observed that the challenges of solid waste management includes the lack of recycling entrepreneurship in the county.

"Very few people are willing to invest in garbage due to the belief that the work is filthy," he said.

The absence of waste management facilities has resulted in solid waste being dumped in public dumpsite areas which eventually end up along the non-designated areas.
