Kisii County Education Board has blamed poor performance in public schools in national examinations on teachers who concentrate more on their personal businesses at the expense of students.
The chairman of the Kisii Education Board Mr Henry Onderi said that one of the major reason contributing to the falling of the quality of education in the county is teachers spending more time on their businesses.
Speaking in his office on Tuesday, Mr Onderi said that teachers have timelines within which they are supposed to have finished teaching the whole syllabus as put by the ministry of education. He said they should not wait until exams approach to start rushing students to finish the syllabus.
“We have a situation where throughout the term, we are not able to cover our syllabus but come the end of the year we start rushing students. I am now requesting, let’s clear the syllabus in good time,” he said.
He also called on parents to team up with teachers and help them in shaping the behaviours of their children and stop them from engaging in drug abuse. He noted this was another reason why the education levels in the Gusii region are still wanting.
“We as parents need to help the schools in instilling discipline in our children. These students sometimes indulge in drug abuse or join evil gangs and we are now saying help the schools to help our children,” said Onderi.
