Teachers in Kisii County have now threatened to push for the dissolution of Teachers Service Commission (TSC) if it fails to pay them their salary increment as ordered by the Supreme Court.
Led by the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kisii Branch Secretary General Shem Nyaundi, the officials faulted the commission for ignoring court orders and turned against them.
“It is very unfortunate that TSC was now turning against teachers who mobilized other Kenyans to reject the 2005 constitutional referendum because it had left out the commission,” said Nyaundi
Nyaundi was speaking in Kisii, where he declared that teachers would not go back to class unless they get their 50 to 60 percent pay increment, since they had the backing of the Supreme Court.
“The government should be keen on the supreme court’s ruling of our salary increment before telling us of the legality of the strike and issues of unprotected strike,” said Nyaundi
He asked TSC officials not to waste their time moving around schools checking on the teachers present, since there was none and neither are the pupils and they should just mark zero attendance since no teacher is ready to go to school.
“We will not be cowed by any one’s threats. Let the government know we are ready to lay down our tools as long as it takes,” added Nyaundi.
