A 17-year-old girl was arraigned before a Thika court to answer to charges of abandoning her nine month old daughter at Muguga Village in Makongeni estate.
Appearing before Thika Senior Principal Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Friday, the court heard that on June 15, 2015 the girl abandoned her baby in a bush with the intention of disposing her off.
The girl who is a class seven drop out pleaded guilty to the charge and told the court that she had abandoned the baby because she was jobless and could not fend for her.
The court placed her under probation for three years to give her time to fend for her baby upon promising that she would take care of the child now that she had gotten a casual job.
The magistrate instructed Probation Officer Esther Munene to ensure the teenager is closely monitored and counseled to ensure that she keeps off further truancy saying that at her age she was capable of reforming and becoming a good citizen as she was only 17.
The girl told journalists she was ready to change and would take care of her child adding that she had consequently grown very fond of her child and will not consider abandoning her again.
