The Kiambu government has asked tenants living in condemned houses and structures to vacate them before the onset of the anticipated El Nino rains in October.

Kiambu County officer in charge of housing and urban development Lucy Munjogu who spoke to journalists in Thika town Wednesday, said the move is aimed at averting disasters that may arise from continued occupation of the structures.

"All tenants occupying houses that have been condemned for demolition are requested to move from them for their own safety," said the county executive.

Munjogu said the magnitude and impact of the rains is expected to be big and therefore the need to take precautions.

She said those living in storeyed buildings ought to be extra careful and seek to find the conditions of the houses they are living in.

The officer indicated that the county housing officials will conduct regular inspections in major urban centres and advising residents on such structures.
