Kikuyu parents have been warned against entrusting strangers with tutoring their children during the ongoing teachers' strike saying that some are conmen.
This comes as a group of Thogoto residents cry foul after a middle-aged man who they thought was a teacher swindled them after being paid to teach their children.
The man is said to have ran away with Sh60,000 from the parents who had paid Sh2,000 each. Speaking to HiviSasa, one of the parents, Lucy Wangui said that the man approached parents in their houses claiming he was an unemployed teacher and offered to teach their children for a fee.
She says that more than 20 parents trusted him to do so only for them to find out later that he was a conman even before the tuition began.
Confirming the incident in his office on Friday, Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu said that con artists were taking advantage of the situation and they knew parents were desperate to see their children learn.
He revealed that this was the second case reported after the first was reported in Kinoo area where some parents were also conned.
The police boss cautioned parents against easily falling into the traps of con artists saying that parents should be alert and realise that such criminals change their tactics depending on the prevailing crisis, this time being the teacher's strike.
"Some can be rapists or even kidnappers and parents should not trust strangers at such times," he warned.
