Three hotel workers were on Wednesday fined Sh10,000 each by a Thika court after they were caught by county government environment officials disposing off waste water in an on open ground.

The three; Stephen Njoroge, John Nderitu and Nancy Wairimu were arrested on Tuesday and pleaded guilty before Thika Resident Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo.

According to the charge sheet, the three were found disposing off the waste outside a hotel along Garissa Road.

While handing the sentence, Onsarigo said the penalty would serve as a lesson to those with a habit of contravening environmental laws.

"Environmental laws are most of the times disregarded yet they are very important as they border on our well-being, health and life. I Hope this sentence will serve to remind you and others of this," said Onsarigo.

While pleading for leniency, the three said they were just hotel workers and the owner had not provided them with an alternative disposal area.

Their plea, was however, not heard and were ordered to pay the fine or spend three months behind bars.
