Three touts on Monday morning denied looting charges when they appeared before a Kisumu court.
The three, Paul Okemo, Erick Okech and Joshua Mwili are alleged to have looted a burning shop in Kisumu’s Kibos area.
The court heard that the suspects pretended to have been helping Stephen Mwala to put out a fire at his shop, but instead took the advantage of the crowd that had gathered to loot the shop.
According the prosecutor Simon Koech, the three were in the company of another matatu driver who was not in court.
The driver, the court heard, was the one who ferried the items to an unknown location.
The matter was reported to Kondele police station after Mwala reported the incident.
According the prosecutor, the complainant had managed to save many goods but they were nowhere to be seen moments after the fire was put out.
He said they were prime suspects after it was discovered that they were missing yet all those who had helped in putting out the fire were accountable.
The incident occurred on September 2.
Police have recovered some of the items such as sugar, cooking oil, soap and salt, while others are still missing.
They were remanded for seven days after chief magistrate Lucy Gitari denied them bail.
