Eateries in Maseno are making a killing as Maseno University students flock their joints to dine.
Jacob Okoth who runs a food kiosk said on Friday he has been forced to hire two more workers to serve the rising number of customers, most of them students visiting his joint.
The university opened recently and all the students from first year through to fourth year are in session.
“The university mess cannot serve all of us even though the food there is cheap. We are forced to come here to avoid the long queues at the mess,” said student Dan Kimwei.
“We are hoping that the university will improve services at the mess as buying food outside is expensive. For the past two weeks, food prices have been rising steadily due to high demand,” added Kimwei.
“I am forced to buy food as early as 6pm because by 7pm it’s hard to get the food of your choice. To make matters worse, one is forced to find their way into the food joints,” said another student Joyce Awino.
Students residing in hostels are not allowed to cook thus forcing them to buy food.
“Hotel business is now booming as compared to earlier days. The food is usually finished by 8pm. I am planning to expand my business to cater for more students,” noted Okoth.
