Mukiriti traders in Thika have expressed concern over the mounds of garbage at the market saying they pose a health risk.

They said the situation at the market is further compounded by lack of waste bins. “Thika is a developed town and we don’t expect this kind of laxity. We are calling on Kiambu governor (William Kabogo) and his team to add us more litter bins to cater for the increased number of traders and buyers. We need a clean environment,’’ said Milcah Wanjiru.

“Look at that, this is a shame and a blow to us. In fact, this can really cost us if the December rains find the place in this state. We care about our health and that is why we pay levies for services like garbage collection.. We don’t want to suffer from cholera and typhoid. Kabogo should wake up,’ added John Kugwa.

However, an official from the county said most of the garbage is thrown by rogue people at night.

“Most of the garbage you’ve been shown by traders is usually dumped at night in different places when the county council officers are away. This makes our work difficult as a county since there are designated places for dumping of litter,” said Hildah Wangechi from the county Rates department.

She added that plans are underway to put up more garbage bins in the town and markets to improve hygiene.
