Kiambu Sub-County traffic base commander, chief inspector, Gabriel Mulei has cautioned motorists who drop off and pick passengers in undesignated areas saying they will face the law.
Mulei who spoke to HiviSasa in his office on Friday warned motorists particularly in Githunguri town that their actions pose a danger to other road users and therefore will be prosecuted for flouting traffic rules.
He singled out those plying the Githunguri-Kambaa road as the most notorious in speeding and also picking and dropping off passengers at prohibited areas.
Mulei said he aims at instilling discipline among matatu operators who he accused of blatantly disobeying traffic laws, even when there are clear road signs.
“We have tolerated this impunity for a long time and time has come for us to act on this indiscipline. It is unfortunate that people can see or hear warnings but fail to adhere to them,” said the traffic commander.
He added that most drivers heading towards Githunguri town flout traffic rules and drive as if the road has double lanes thus endangering the lives of many.
He also cautioned motorists to be extra vigilant especially at night as most of the roads are narrow with a number of sharp bends and very steep slopes which are disregarded by some motorists.
He added that most of the roads leading to Githunguri have no streetlights hence the need for them to be cautious.
He said his department will intensify its operations to bring to book culpable drivers.
A matatu driver, Alex Mwangi, expressed regret that some matatu operators were ignorant on traffic rules.
He urged fellow matatu operators to obey traffic rules or face the law.
