Two suspected illicit brewers were arrested during a crackdown spearheaded by Riamoni Sub-Location assistant chief on Wednesday, last week.

During the crackdown, over 300 litres of illicit brew was impounded with area women lauding Mr Sambu Bosire and his team of local elders for their relentless efforts to curb the rampant brewing in the region.

Sambu warned brewers against continuing to engage in the business and advised them to venture into alternative businesses for their sustainability.

“I am really disappointed by our people. We have persistently warned them against engaging in the business but some of them are not following our directives. Our people must understand that they can engage in different businesses other than this one,” said Sambu.

He said the crackdown would continue despite condemnation by a section of the public adding that that they will soon launch a crackdown in Riooga following complaints from area residents.

“I really do not care about the condemnation as long as majority of the public support the exercise. Those in Riooga region should be ready for a major crackdown following the reports we are receiving from the ground,” he said.

Area residents led by Mrs Pauline Mwango welcomed the crackdown and vowed to work closely with the provincial administration.

“This is for our own good and we are ready to work with the Provincial administration. Our children and husbands are the casualties and we are fed up with the brewers,” she said.

The suspects were handed over to Keroka police station.
