Two houses were on Thursday torched by irate members of the public at Awasi market in Nyando Sub-County as they protested against insecurity.
The locals first blocked the busy Kisumu-Nairobi highway by lighting bonfires hence paralysing transport in the area.
A resident Jacob Otieno said that the locals were tired of cases of insecurity and had therefore decided to demonstrate.
Otieno said many people have been killed in the market situated along the highway but that the police are doing little to contain the situation.
“Awasi is a small market yet you wonder why police cannot deal with rising cases of insecurity. A gentleman was killed here recently and locals are now living in fear,” he said.
The locals then proceeded to a homestead nearby and set fire to 2 houses that they alleged belong to the suspects they believe are terrorising residents of Awasi.
The police had difficult time restoring order in the small town and were forced to lobby teargas to drive away the demonstrators who were also pelting the officers with stones.
The officers howver finally managed to clear the road and restored transport though most motorists have been forced to use other longer routes to reach their destinations.
