Uasin Gishu County Assembly has passed a bill that will ensure all drainage channels are opened for the smooth flow of water, as the county prepares for the forecasted El Nino rains.
Speaking at the Uasin Gishu County Assembly premises on Wednesday, the chairman of the committee of roads Isaac Chirchir, who presented the motion, said that the bill seeks to direct the ministry of public works to build tunnels from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, covering Zion Mall to Sosiani River, to ensure overflowing waters are directed to Sosiani River.
“Eldoret town in the recent past has had a problem with drainage patterns, and with the passing of the bill, drainage problems in the Central Business Unit will be a thing of the past,” he said.
“The bill is meant to ensure that all drainage paths are opened and any private developer that has built a house on the drainage system will be forced to move and the owner arrested, the bill is only waiting for the governor’s assent for it to become law,” he said.
He however urged Uasin Gishu residents to stop disposing waste products in the drainage system, saying it is the main cause of blocked drainages.
He further warned that all those found littering the drainages will be arrested and prosecuted.
