The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (KUPPET) Uasin Gishu Executive secretary Rosemary Murundu has called upon the government to hire more teachers to cater for the enormous shortage that is being witnessed in the county.

Speaking on Tuesday in her office, Murundu said that the recent hiring of 5,000 teachers by the government countrywide is a drop in the ocean, and a mockery to the education sector.

“Uasin Gishu County has 160 secondary public schools and most schools are in dire need of at least five teachers, and on the contrary, we were only allocated 106 slots.

“For students’ grades to be improved, more teachers must be hired or else teachers will be overworked and at long last, students will perform poorly since he/she will not be able to monitor all students,” she added.

She reiterated that it has been hard for public schools to employ BOG teachers, which is not a good option since they are not consistent and can leave anytime, leaving the student behind syllabus-wise.

“A school like Alaoreto Girls High School Matunda has a student population of about 500 students with at least four streams with twenty five teachers only, do you expect teachers to do magic for good results to be achieved, and yet the school could have been a prestigious girls’ school only if it could have enough teachers, as Kuppet we are demanding for more teachers for sanity to be brought in our classes" Murundu said
