A university don has decried continued involvement of university students in criminal activities and drug abuse.
Speaking on Friday Dr Christopher Mungai, a lecturer at University of Nairobi-Kikuyu campus said recent cases of university students being involved in hijacking and demand for ransoms was worrying and causing concern to parents and university authorities.
He said there have been reported cases of drug abuse and consumption of illicit brew by university students that had occasionally led to death.
“Universities, parents and the government invest heavily in training students to provide innovative solutions to challenges facing the society and if the students start getting involved in crime and alcoholism, the vice will lead to huge losses to the society,” said Dr Mungai.
The lecturer also expressed concern over continued decline in academic performance among boys in high schools and the low number of male students taking professional courses at the university level.
He said that girls have recently been performing better than boys in academics and blamed the dismal performance by the boys on emphasis on girl-child education at the expense of the boy child.
Dr Mungai said that this has resulted to boys in schools and male students at the universities undergoing stress and discouragement which makes them engage in criminal activities.
He asked parents and teachers to pay attention to the boy child and ensure they are given equal opportunities with girls to enable them excel in their careers and life.
