Chairman of Ushirika Council Mr Edward Matoke has revealed a plan to make sure that Sacco societies within Kisumu County are productive and active.

Speaking during Ushirika day celebrations held at Lions Secondary School, Mr Matoke said Ushirika Council has set future plans before they celebrate the next Ushirika day which includes offering communal work to the public to help realise the importance of Sacco societies to them.

Matoke said there is a great need for Saccos to organise for the county cooperative forums for exchange of ideas and bonding adding that such can be achieved by partnering with Kisumu County government through the Ministry of Industrialization, Energy and Enterprise.

Mr Matoke revealed that the Ushirika Council has an initiative of buying one plot for its members within Kisumu County as a way of motivating the members to hard work.

He also challenged the county cooperatives to have ball games as a way of bringing together different people to join the Sacco and promote harmony among the members.

However, the Ushirika Council chairman lamented that there is lower savings among Saccos in the county saying that the trend is one of the major challenge they are facing in Saccos.

He appealed to members of the Saccos to embrace savings for the development and improvements of their Saccos.

Meanwhile Ushuru Sacco, Kisumu branch was crowned as the best managed Sacco countrywide during the Ushirika day Celebrations.

According to chairman of Ushuru Sacco Mr Owuor Awuor, they managed to be the best due their team work they have been embracing.

“I am glad that we emerged to be the best managed Sacco in the country which is attributed to our team work,” said Chair Mr Awuor.

Mr Owuor revealed that Ushuru Sacco Kisumu branch which covers regions including Usenge, Kericho, Kisumu, Kisii, Mbita, Isbania, among other towns in Western region has a population of 600 members.

He however, noted that they have been embracing Information Technologies to reach out members and to even send short massages.

Ushuru chair said that they have recruited several members including others from National Hospital Insurance Funds adding they are also working with Credit Reference Bureau to make sure they eliminate the defaulters.

He challenged other Saccos to put more efforts for them to be in the same position by embracing the use of IT, and recruiting more members.

Ushuru Sacco emerged the best in management followed by the Metropolitan Sacco among other Saccos.
