Egerton University students have been challenged to be users and agents of Swahili language while in campus.
Speaking on Saturday during a Swahili forum in the University's Njoro Campus, Nation Media Group quality manager Ken Walibora challenged students and lovers of the language to always speak and champion for the use of the language in institutions of higher learning.
He further called on students to avoid extreme bias towards Swahili since it was the region's common language used.
"Do not lean too much towards English language, always try to use Swahili because it is our 'lingua franca' in the region," he stated.
The Siku Njema author also bemoaned the demise of Swahili greats like Omar Babu Majani, who until the time of his death was a Kiswahili professor at the University of Cologne Germany.
He said his demise was not only painful to the immediate family but also to the Swahili family at large.
His sentiments were echoed by Dr Abdulrahman Taib, a lecturer at the campus who called on students to always attend such conferences and do research about the language during the forum organised by Chama cha Kiswahili cha Egerton (CHAKIE).
