Kiambu County Senator Kimani Wamatangi has blamed the alcohol abuse menace in the county on ineffective laws.

The senator said the government should declare alcohol abuse as a crisis in the county.

Addressing the public at at Kiambu Town on Tuesday, Wamatangi said that the existing laws have failed to curb alcohol abuse in Kiambu and other parts.

The senator said that alcoholism is the order of the day among most Kiambu residents.

“There is need for us to revise the laws governing the alcohol sector and come up with policies that will effectively deal with the problem,” he said.

Wamatangi said that 70 per cent of the county's population is alcoholic. 

“The current statistics on alcoholism in Kiambu is a matter of concern and requires urgent solutions,” he said.

Wamatangi also blamed government agencies mandated to regulate the liquor industry of sleeping on the job.

“It is unfortunate that people are dying due to consumption of illegal alcohol yet we have agencies that should regulate the industry and curb such cases,” he said.

The Senator said that alcoholism is a serious setback to the development of the county.

He asked Kiambu top leaders to convene an urgent meeting to discuss the crisis and come up with solutions before it is too late.
