Youths from Nyamira County under the influence of illegal drugs have a sigh of relief after an aspiring West Mugirango MP offered to pay for their rehabilitation and ensure their successful integrating to the community.
This comes after a section of residents from the constituency challenged the national government to execute a crackdown on unscrupulous business people selling the illegal drugs (bhang and heroine) in the region, targeting the young generation.
The youthful aspirant Peter Oire Sunday said he was ready to pay for rehabilitation expenses during a door to door campaign against the illicit drugs.
“I am saddened to hear that our youths are getting lost in this kind of business. I didn’t believe but what I have seen today is quite appalling. I want to urge victims to register with me so that we take them for rehabilitation. We need the energy of our youths to be used for gainful activities and not drugs,” he said.
Mr Oire questioned the commitment of John Mututho led NACADA to curb the rising incidents of youths engaging in drug abuse.
“NACADA is not doing enough to curb drug abuse in the country. Instead, they are always talking of illicit brews yet the drug menace is here with us. Emphasis should be put on illegal drugs. It is no longer prominent at the Coast as the government puts it, the businessmen are targeting youths from upcountry,” he claimed.
During the campaign, five addicts from Bogichora region were rescued and will be soon taken to Asumbi Rehabilitation Center for six months.
