Kibera’s facelift has gone a notch higher with various opportunities being realised and utilised especially by the youths. The one time known crime zone is now turning to be the epitome of creativity and innovations.

This is what best describes Pamoja Youth Group, a community based youth outfit that has brought together a resilient team with a vision to eradicate poverty amongst themselves by providing various services to Kibera community.

The latest venture that the group is presently boasting of is the launch of a free public television dubbed Sare TV.

Sare TV is a big screen erected in Karanja area where residents gather in the evenings to watch relevant recorded programmes ranging from animations, action movies and sports among other programmes for free.

Ironically, Pamoja Youth Group is located in an area that for a long had been regarded as one of the crime zones in Kibera.

However, their presence there has changed the tune of events since residents can move freely until late in the night especially now that the Sare TV project has occupied the area.

They intend to benefit from the programme by airing paid adverts from various business organisations with the interest of capturing the Kibera audience.

“Sare TV is a programme that has been brought to us by a group of partners that identified our efforts in community work and saw it best to add us another project to benefit us and the community. This is a programme that provides entertainment to residents as well as enhancing unity,” said Nabil Asindwa, the group’s secretary.

Asindwa explains that the programmes aired on Sare TV are for edutainment and therefore are not meant to erode the morals of the people especially children whom are only allowed to watch during weekends and holidays.

A few meters from the screen is a parking lot where motorists can park their cars overnight at a fee.

“We provide security especially to cars that are parked here at some little fee. Being that Sare TV is solar powered, we can leave it on overnight to supplement the street lights in lighting a larger area even deeper into the nearby residence,” added Asindwa.
