Two rhinos and 100 buffaloes have died from an anthrax outbreak in Nakuru.

Nakuru CeC for Agriculture, Stanley Chepkwony claimed that the disease has affected Rongai, Nakuru West and Nakuru East sub counties following the outbreak.

Chepwkony claimed that they had confirmed the presence of the disease after samples were investigated adding that officers had been dispatched to the affected areas.

He said that the open sewer next to the Lake Nakuru National Park has contributed to this spread among the wild animals and also domestic animals grazing at the park’s border.

Through a press statement, Chepkwony banned the sale of meat from that area.

“I am issuing a direct quarantine to all the animals in the area. We are also warning people not to come into contact with these animals or meat. People should also make sure they consume inspected meat,’ he said.

He has also called on farmers to be cautious and to report any anthrax signs in their animals including high temperature, shivering or twitching, harsh dry coat, blood in dung or in nostrils, decrease or complete loss of milk and also dejection and loss of appetite.

“We will be vaccinating animals for free in all the mentioned area to prevent the disease from spreading further,” he added
