A woman was on Wednesday arrested in Kikuyu after allegedly locking her 14-year-old disabled child in the house for the past two years.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu said the woman was arrested after a neighbour reported the incident.
He said police responded and were able to arrest the woman and rescue the child from the situation.
The police boss said the child had not undergone any special school programme and she was only given food. She was never allowed to venture outside.
Mr Maweu explained that the child had been locked in a different room and no one was allowed to see her.
"It is a serious crime to lock such individuals and deny them their right. I want to warn those who are doing it to stop as it is a serious crime. I want to also urge residents to be vigilant and report such incidents to the police," said Maweu.
Maweu said the child is now under good care at the Wema Children's Home in Thogoto, Kikuyu Sub County.
He added that the woman is in police custody at Kikuyu Police Station adding she will appear before a court and charged with the offence.
