Machakos County government has been urged to construct a mother dam to completely fix the perennial water problem in the county.

Addressing Press in Athi River Town on Tuesday, Machakos Women Representative, Susan Musyoka, said water shortage remains the greatest challenge in the county and has to be properly and effectively addressed.

Musyoka said women and children from most parts of the region spend a lot of time sourcing for the commodity thereby compromising the county's economy.

She said the government should construct a big dam within the county, probably at Thwake River in Mwala Sub-County and the water should be pumped to reservoirs located in communities across the county to allow easy access.

The legislature said this would equally improve the county's economy given that women would utilise more of their productive time in engaging in economic activities instead of collecting water which in some areas is sought for kilometers away from homes.

"Both the state and county government should concentrate on constructing big dams that can supply water to the rest of the people across the county,” said Musyoka.

Musyoka said her office would push the governments to consider construction of a mother dam in the county to end the water problem which has been faced by women in the region for decades.
