Maendeleo ya wanawake Thika region chairman Beatrice Wairimu has called on women in the area to take advantage of the various devolved funds to promote their economic status.

Wairimu asked them to position themselves strategically in order to benefit from the Uwezo fund, the Women Enterprise fund and funds from the county governments among others to start projects that will liberate them from economic bondage.

Speaking in the Makongeni meeting hall on Tuesday during a table banking opening, Wairimu said she was confident devolution would empower communities, and especially women. This would enable them to stop depending solely on their spouses.

"Devolution has and will only benefit women groups involved in table banking; women of integrity like you should embrace the concept through registering in women groups," she said.

Wairimu however warned women against starting group projects, but instead using their membership in the groups as guarantees for loans to start individual projects.

She advised women to shun shylocks, merry-go-rounds, pyramid schemes and cunning women out to fleece them and bringing their groups down.

"Many women have lost cash in pyramid schemes and shylocks. This areas should not be of interest to women who are optimistic and focused with regards to growing economically. Let us unite all women and embrace investment culture that I believe will take us far," she added.
