The government has officially closed the Yamumbi IDP camp in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County after successful resettlement and compensation.
Deputy President William Ruto during the closure event, said the Jubilee government is determined to resettle all internally displaced persons following the 2007-08 Post Election Violence which claimed many lives and left thousands displaced.
Speaking on Sunday after giving cheques to 100 IDPs at Yamumbi and declaring the official closure of the IDP camp, the deputy president said each of the families will be getting Sh200,000 to help them buy land and start afresh.
"In this financial year the government set aside Sh1.1 billion to resettle over 25,000 internally displaced persons in the country," he said.
He said only IDPs from Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and Bomet counties would benefit from the Sh1.1 billion for resettlement.
"After offering these cheques, I can now declare the Yamumbi camp officialy closed and I pray that post election violence will never again take place in this country. I urge IDPs to use the money well for the betterment of their livelihood," he added.
