6 youth groups in Kikuyu on Monday received loans that will enable them to establish their businesses in a bid to curb idleness and unemployment.
The youth benefited with the loans thanks to a women's group in Kikuyu called Social Effort Empowerment Programme (S.E.E.P) that issued out the loans with an aim of helping to curb self employment.
Speaking at Give Hope hall in Kikuyu today where Kshs 360,000 was the total amount given to the 6 groups, the chairlady of S.E.E.P Ms. Annette Waithera said that the group had come up with the programme few months ago.
She said that among the 10 youth groups that applied, only 6 qualified and they got Kshs. 60,000 each. Waithera however said that this was a challenge for the qualified groups to go and produce more money with the little they had been given.
The chairlady highlighted that the women's group didn't issue the loans to get any profit when the loans are returned. She explained that their agenda was to help the youth in creating their own employment. She also cautioned the groups against sharing the money for individual business as the groups which are all registered are expected to work together.
"We encourage the youth that didn't qualify to get the loans to reapply having corrected where they missed to get the loans. The next application will come in January. Those who have benefitted should stick to working together in order to avoid misusing the money," she said.
