Youths in Kiambu have been advised to be wary of fake NGOs that will try to entice them with offers like job opportunities.

This is in relation to the 20,000 youths who were conned in Kasarani when they registered for job opportunities by a quack NGO a month ago.

Speaking from her office on Tuesday, the area Youths Officer Charity Githinji noted that the youths were working hard to find a source of income and that it was both a good and a bad thing.

She explained that the more they kept themselves busy the more it helped them to avoid getting into mischievous behaviours like crime but it also posed a risk of them being taken advantage of.

“The youths should be aware of these fake NGOs as they are devising new ways to take advantage of their ambitions and thirst to be employed. They should ensure before they agree to offer any of their services be it financial or labour, a background check of the NGO has been carried out and confirmed with regards to its legitimacy,” Githinji said.

Speaking with regards to the matter, a youth in the area, Kevin Wangai said that their youth group was once approached by an alleged spokesperson of an NGO to help them market a book and use the returns to help them start a business.

They however only discovered that they had been conned after they had finished marketing.

He said youths across the county and country as a whole should be wary of these persons who want to take advantage of them.

Wangai said that it was advisable for them to seek guidance from government departments to ensure that the NGOs are legitimate before striking any deal.
