Kisumu County Chief Executive for Finance and Planning George Ongaya on Wednesday survived impeachment after being accused of abuse of office and funds misappropriation.

18 MCAs in an impeachment motion voted in his favour while 11 voted against his stay in the Finance and Planning docket at the county.

A report table on Wednesday by Kondele MCA Gabriel Ochieng and seconded by South Nyakach MCA Petronilla Omondi recommended that George Ongaya be given a second chance to serve in office.

Ochieng said that after investigations were carried out by the five member Adhoc Committee to investigate Mr Ongaya had recommended that the County Assembly should enact the county ward fund act.

According to the South Nyakach MCA, Mr Ongaya allegedly withdrew Sh52 million from a Family Bank account to settle pending taxes to the Kenya Revenue Authority.

However, Seme MCA James Dhiang’a opposed the return of Mr Ongaya back in office adding that the CeC in charge of Finance and Planning should step aside and wait for further investigation.

The Finance committee chair, James Were, said Mr Ongaya had failed in discharging his duties with the decline in the revenue collection in Kisumu County.

“Madam Speaker, in the former local authority government Kisumu used to collect a lot of revenue but with Mr Ongaya’s term the revenue has decreased significantly therefore he should go home,” said Were.
