The crackdown on unroadworthy vehicles and motorcycles got road users on the wrong side whereby a number of vehicles and motorcycles were impounded on Tuesday in Kisii town and Kisii-Marani road.
Speaking to this reporter, Kisii County Police Commander Agnes Mudambi said they seized 42 vehicles, 11 motorcycles and arrested 17 passengers who broke traffic rules.
Most of the vehicles impounded were Probox.
Mrs Mudambi said they will continue with the crackdown till sanity prevails in the transport sector.
"Yesterday's crackdown was very successful. We will not relent till we restore sanity in our transport sector," she said.
"I ask matatu and motorcycle owners to ensure they are adhering to transport rules like having safety belts fixed in their vehicles, stickers, reflector jackets, helmets, among other requirements. I also ask members of the public to desist from using questionable PSVs and motorcycles," she added.
She revealed they also seized a private vehicle operating in Kisii-Marani road as a matatu.
The police boss hailed members of the public for their tip-off that enabled them to seize the vehicles and motorcycles.
"We have been working very well with members of the public. They help us with information that leads us to napping of law breakers in the transport sector. I ask them to continue the cooperation with us because all of us get affected when an accident happens on our roads," she said.
Those arrested were arraigned in court on Wednesday.
