Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata has announced that authorities in the county have received 50 names of suspected cattle rustlers and others who trade in stolen animals.

Mr Elungata said the 50 names will not be made public until thorough scrutiny is done by the police alongside 'Nyumba Kumi' officials.

Elungata said police will be able to get to the real culprits of cattle rustling within Kisumu/Nandi county border.

He said they are committed to stamp out the vice.

“We have started a process of identifying these people and follow them up with through investigations to ascertain that they are really involved in cattle rustling or involved in selling meat of stolen animals in butchers,” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Kisumu on Wednesday, Elungata said the county is calm save for cases of cattle rustling.

The commissioner said the names that were given out confidentially originated from Kisumu and Nandi Counties.

He said they have engaged the officers in Nandi County to help in verifying the names to be able to jointly fight the menace as a team.

“The names we have are of people in both counties. Officers in both counties have embarked on a mission to get to the bottom of this matter,” he said.

Elungata urged the locals to embrace farming and desist from stock theft that puts them at logger heads with the security officers.
