Speaking during a thanksgiving service at Dr Sagini hall on Thursday, Prof Akama advised the students to abstain till marriage.

He was worried about the rise of unwanted pregnancies and fear of HIV spreading among students.

"Kisii is one of the regions with very high HIV preference rates. Therefore, abstain from sex until you finish your studies and get married," said Akama.

The don insisted that there was a lot of freedom at the university level but required heightened level of personal responsibility.

He also warned freshmen against taking drugs and excess alcoholism during their studies.

"Be aware of the surrounding environment pertaining to alcohol and substance abuse. They will destroy your future early," he added.

More than 400 new students were admitted for January 2016 intake.
