Kisumu County governor Jack Ranguma has appealed to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to address some of the underlying factors that led to clashes at the border of Kisumu and Nandi counties.

Ranguma said the clashes should not be pegged on cattle rustling, noting that there is much to the clashes that must be looked at broadly.

“It cannot be cattle rustling that leads to clashes, I hear people talk and it is evident that land is a factor,” he said.

The governor noted that Nandi people are bent on extending their boundary into Muhoroni constituency.

He said that most killings in the constituency since he took over as the governor have been linked to land.

“My people who are farming sugarcane in the border have been occasionally attacked, killed. The main aim is to drive them away from their land,” he said.

Speaking at Kibigori area on Wednesday, Ranguma said that there were claims by Nandi residents that Chemelil Sugar Company is located on their land.

He said that such statements should not be taken lightly but be looked into and an amicable solution found.

Ranguma said that nobody should be allowed to interfere with the boundaries.

He said when the boundaries were reviewed by the defunct Electoral Boundaries Commission, no one raised a finger to call for the extension of the boundary.
