Residents of Mavoko sub county have been hit by a water shortage.
The most affected areas are the slums in Mlolongo and Athi River towns where majority cannot afford buying water sold by vendors.
“We are seriously suffering here as residents of the City Carton Slum. Most of us lack even little water to drink, leave alone that to either cook or wash with our dirty clothes,” said Esther Musembi.
Ms Musembi who spoke to writer at the slum on Tuesday, said life was getting more difficult for the residents.
Musembi who is a single mother of four children said she did not have time to collect water from River Athi that is approximately two kilometers from the slum as other residents do.
A spot check conducted by this writer found out that the situation is the same in Slaughter, Jam City, Kisumu Ndogo, JuaKali, Sofia, Kasuitu, Kwa Mang’eli and Bondeni Slums.
The condition has forced several women and children to spend most of their time seeking for the commodity from the source.
Though the water price had reduced from Sh100 for a 20 litre Jerican to Sh30 few weeks ago, it has again doubled to Sh60, a price which resident Simon Mumo says can only be afforded by the rich.
The residents called on the state’s intervention arguing they had experienced the problem for quiet along time thereby thwarting their efforts to move from impoverished living standards.
