Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata has announced that an Anti-Stock Theft Unit base will be established at Kibigori, the epicenter of border clashes between Kisumu and Nandi communities.
Elungata said that two vehicles have already been allocated to the post to patrol the border.
“As security committee, we have decided to establish the unit and beef it up with vehicles and personnel,” he said.
The commissioner said the two vehicles will help in patrolling the area and responding to help from the locals in case of cattle rustling.
He said that they are determined to end the cattle rustling racket that always ignite border clashes leading to loss of lives and property.
Speaking on Wednesday at Kibigori during a meeting convened by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) led by its chairman Francis ole Kaparo, Elungata appealed for support from the public to win the war on cattle rustling.
“All I want is support from the public, please volunteer information to us, tell us those colluding with cattle rustlers from Nandi,” he said.
Elungata announced that already seven suspected cattle rustlers who were on their list had been arrested and taken to court.
He said most butchers that are selling cheap meat have been closed and their owners’ taken in for interrogation to reveal their source of meat.
