Mombasa was full of fun over the weekend, as the rib cracking Churchill Show crew stormed the city for a valentine’s day special edition.
Apart from hosting a comedy show at Flamingo Resort on Friday night, the crew also went to the streets of Mombasa to interact with fans, and this is where the big question emerged.
Do Kenyans watch the news?
One of the crew members, David the Student, went to the streets and asked residents what they thought about a certain statement from Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
David tricked the residents into believing that Governor Joho had ordered the two ivory statues at Moi Avenue to be replaced with a statue of a fish or something that was more relevant to Mombasa.
“It was in yesterday’s news bulletin. Governor Joho said the two ivories at Moi Avenue should be removed because there are no elephants in Mombasa. What do you think about that?” David asked a resident.
“I don’t have any problem with that, if he decides to do that, then it is ok since he is the governor,” a lady replied.
“On what channel did you watch it.” he asked.
I watched it yesterday on KTN,” she replied.
The clip was played during the Churchill show, showing how residents kept on insisting they watched it on the news yet it was a prank.
Governor Joho, who had attended the show, burst into laughter, wondering the level of understanding his people have.
The crowd could not hold back their laughter when one man confessed that he had read the story in a newspaper.
“I don’t agree because that’s the only statue that symbolises Mombasa and it was erected many years ago. I read the story on yesterday’s paper but I don’t agree with it at all,” he said.
Considering the fact that it was just a prank, the question is do Kenyans really watch the news or care to find out what is happening around them?
