Nyando Parliamentary aspirant Jared Okello has called on police to expedite the arrest of youth who assaulted him.
He was attacked by youth on Saturday during the burial of Luo Council of Elders Vice Treasurer Michael Odotte Ojiem in Boya, Nyando.
The youth descended on Mr Okello with kicks and blows before he was whisked away by police officers.
He found himself in an awkward situation after his supporters clashed with those of incumbent, Fred Outa.
One youth was allegedly stabbed in the stomach during the chaos that forced a section of mourners to flee for their lives.
A section of youth accused Okello of disrespecting Cord leader Raila Odinga who was present at the burial.
“We will teach him a lesson to respect other leaders, you cannot come with goons to disrupt a peaceful burial ceremony and we let you go free,” one of the angry youth shouted.
Governor Jack Ranguma, Senator Anyang Nyong’o, MPs Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda), Silvance Osele (Kabondo-Kasipul), Aduma Owuor (Nyakach) and Kisumu Women Representative Rose Nyamunga were present.
Leaders present condemned the incident and urged Okello to exercise decorum and respect to other leaders instead of cheap political gimmick.
Okello accused Outa of organising youth who attacked him.
He reported the matter to the police and called for speedy investigations and arrest of the perpetrators.
However, Outa denied the allegations and blamed youth allied to Okello for igniting the violence that nearly disrupted the burial ceremony.
Kisumu County Commissioner John Elungata and Assistant Inspector General of Police Joseph Keitany warned youth not to be involved in chaos.
“People should respect funerals and the bereaved. Chaotic individuals will be dealt with firmly,” Mr Elungata said.
Keitany said they will not tolerate acts of lawlessness and urged politicians to stop inciting youth against other leaders.
He said the county security team will not allow any form of violence especially as the country nears election.
