Githobokoni ward police chief Anthony Mugo has warned residents in Githobokoni against a cartel circulating fake currency.

Mugo said a man had been arrested in the area with fake currency in Sh2, 000 denominations amounting to Sh54, 000.

Speaking from his office on Tuesday morning, Mugo said that police had arrested Moses Kariuki, 27, with the fake currency while trying to circulate it at Githobokoni township.

He cautioned the members of the public to be careful when handling and identifying genuine currency.

"Most of this currency was in the process of being deposited in Mpesa agents an action that would have led to losses among the agents. I urge everyone to be cautious with the money they are handling," he said.

The police officer asked the residents to ensure that they were handling genuine money while going about their businesses.

He added that the suspect allegedly worked in Githobokoni Township as a house boy at one of the homesteads in Githobokoni and moved to Nairobi town before coming back to Githobokoni township with fake money.

The officer in charge said the police were still investigating if there were other currencies circulating that may dupe unsuspecting residents.

He revealed that they had commenced a serious investigation that will help them gather full information before arraigning the suspect in court.
