An acute water shortage has hit Kisii town and its neighbouring estates, forcing residents to draw water from nearby streams to meet their domestic demands.

The shortage, which started about a month ago, has thrown the residents into a panic for fear that they might contract diseases from using the untreated water streams.

Two weeks ago, Kisii Water Sewerage and Sanitation Company MD Adams Otachi promised to restore water supply to Kisii and its environs after pipes were destroyed.

Otachi said the taps in the area ran dry when River Gucha burst its banks and swept away the main pipes supplying water to the town in the month of December when heavy rain pounded the region.

“Currently the county government is upgrading its pipes and we expect to finish the work in few days time” he added in a phone call today.

Otachi did not divulge the cost of the repair of the damaged pipes but only termed it as a massive exercise and promised that in the next one week, residents would enjoy normal water supply for their domestic use.

However, some residents were skeptical of the reason as to why there was no water in the area so far, saying it was a deliberate action to deny them water.
