NTSA recently proposed the new rules in a bid to mitigate the rising cases of accidents in the country involving young people.

Only individuals above 30 years would be allowed to drive buses, 25 years for matatu drivers and 21 years for motorcyclists.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, a section of boda boda cyclists at Kisii University stage said the proposed rules were unfair and malicious.

"If NTSA wants to implement the new rules, then it means we would not be able to provide our families' needs since most of us are below 21 years," said Mr Jared Mosiomi.

Mosiomi said most of them had begun boda boda business because they lacked enough money to proceed with their studies after Form Four, and were also faced with poverty.

"I lacked enough money and did not have any sponsorship to join college and therefore boda boda was my only way of generating income to sustain me and my siblings," he said.

A number of the operators hinted that they did not have a valid driving license because it was quite expensive for them to enroll into driving schools.

They pleaded with NTSA not to pass the rules, but to consider the problems the young people are facing.
