Small and large scale farmers from Borabu settlement scheme have been urged to take advantage of the ongoing rains and prepare their land for planting early.

Speaking on Thursday in Matutu where he set up a project that will see a number of farmers benefit from free cultivation by use of a tractor, aspiring Borabu MP Nyandoro Kambi said that residents were to blame for the persistent food shortages that has been experienced in the region for a number of years now.

He challenged farmers to prepare their lands by the end of December so that plantation is done when rains subdue.

“I don’t think we have done well as farmers. Many a times we wait till rains subdue and then we start cultivation. This is why productivity has diminished in our region. This is the opportune time to start preparations of our farms and ahead of planting season once these rains subdue,” he said.

He urged farmers interested in irrigation to harvest water in preparation for the January-February annual drought that reportedly finds many of them unprepared.
